Radeon HD 6790 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon HD 6790 features a core clock frequency of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1050 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 800 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M360, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6790, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 118400 (740%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 will be a lot (approximately 24%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6600 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6790 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4440 (49%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
