Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 has clock speeds of 1030 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260, which comes with GPU core speed of 715 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M260 should be 11% faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 should be a little bit (approximately 20%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3440 (20%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 should be quite a bit (approximately 44%) better at AA than the Radeon R7 M260, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2520 (44%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
