GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon HD 3850 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M has clock speeds of 876 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB, which uses a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a speed of 828 MHz on this particular card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 75 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 3850 1GB is 66% faster than the GeForce GTX 850M in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 52992 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 20992 (66%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M should be much (about 228%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24352 (228%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 850M is superior to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3328 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
