GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M comes with a GPU core clock speed of 876 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 750 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this card. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce GTX 850M 40 Watts
Difference: 9 Watts (29%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 850M should perform just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M should be quite a bit (approximately 484%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29040 (484%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M is much (more or less 367%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11016 (367%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
