GeForce 820M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 820M features a GPU core clock speed of 719 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 should be much (approximately 63%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 820M. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 820M 11504 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7296 (63%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is much (approximately 161%) better at AA than the GeForce 820M, and capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 820M 2876 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4644 (161%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
