GeForce 810M vs GeForce 9800 GTX

Intro

The GeForce 810M features a GPU clock speed of 738 MHz, and the 1024 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 48 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 9800 GTX, which makes use of a 65 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 675 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1100 MHz on this model. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

GeForce 810M 15 Watts
GeForce 9800 GTX 140 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (833%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 9800 GTX should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce 810M overall. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (389%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GTX is a lot (about 632%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 37296 (632%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GTX will be much (about 266%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 810M, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7848 (266%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
