GeForce 9800 GTX vs Radeon R9 M295X

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX has a GPU core speed of 675 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 1100 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M295X, which has core clock speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon R9 M295X 125 Watts
GeForce 9800 GTX 140 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (12%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M295X should in theory be much better than the GeForce 9800 GTX in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 176000 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 105600 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M295X should be quite a bit (approximately 122%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9800 GTX. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 96000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 52800 (122%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M295X is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M295X 24000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13200 (122%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
