GeForce 9800 GT 512MB vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB features clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M270X should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB should be a little bit (about 16%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4600 (16%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M270X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
