Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 has clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with a core clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M270X should perform just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5670 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be much (about 87%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13500 (87%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be much (more or less 87%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 5670, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5400 (87%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
