Radeon R9 M265X vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M265X features a GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which has a core clock speed of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be much (about 26%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6000 (26%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be quite a bit (about 26%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R9 M265X, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
