GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 features a core clock speed of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 902 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M260X, which comes with core clock speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R7 M260X should be a small bit faster than the GeForce GTS 450 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 6272 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 will be quite a bit (more or less 27%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260X. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5256 (27%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 is superior to the Radeon R7 M260X, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5928 (90%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
