Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB features a core clock speed of 650 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 480 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which features core speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB should in theory be much faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is a lot (approximately 21%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3200 (21%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is superior to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2320 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
