GeForce 930M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 930M comes with core speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features a GPU core clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R5 M255 should be a small bit faster than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M is a small bit (about 18%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3472 (18%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is a better choice, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 96 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
