GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4730

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4730, which has GPU core speed of 700 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640(128x5) Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 4730 140 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should be a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4730 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be much (more or less 170%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 38016 (170%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is superior to the Radeon HD 4730, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24608 (439%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
