GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M has clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 5670, which has a clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 1 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be much (about 290%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44916 (290%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24008 (387%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
