GeForce GT 440 3GB vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB features a clock speed of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 965M, which has GPU clock speed of 944 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1024 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 4 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 965M should in theory be much better than the GeForce GT 440 3GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 20800 (48%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (more or less 324%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46160 (324%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is quite a bit (more or less 112%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 440 3GB, and able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15952 (112%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
