GeForce 940M vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with a core clock speed of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5570, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 650 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 5570 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (80%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is a lot (more or less 98%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12728 (98%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3376 (65%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
