GeForce 930M vs Radeon R7 250X 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 930M comes with core speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 250X 2GB, which has a clock frequency of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 250X 2GB should be 400% quicker than the GeForce 930M overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB should be quite a bit (more or less 80%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17728 (80%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB will be quite a bit (more or less 116%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 930M, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8576 (116%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
