GeForce 920M vs GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 920M features core clock speeds of 954 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3, which comes with GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory running at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3 should in theory be quite a bit better than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3 25600 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 11200 (78%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M will be much (about 247%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21728 (247%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 920M is much (more or less 73%) better at AA than the GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3, and able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 1GB GDDR3 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3232 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
