Radeon HD 3470 512MB vs Radeon R7 250X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 512MB uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a speed of 950 MHz on this card. It features 40(8x5) SPUs as well as 4 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 250X, which has GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 250X, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (137%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X should be a lot (about 1150%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 36800 (1150%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 250X is superior to the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12800 (400%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
