Radeon HD 5830 vs Radeon R7 260X

Intro

The Radeon HD 5830 features a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 1120(224x5) SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 260X, which has clock speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1625 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R7 260X 115 Watts
Radeon HD 5830 175 Watts
Difference: 60 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5830 should be 23% faster than the Radeon R7 260X overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 128000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 260X 104000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (23%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 260X will be a lot (approximately 38%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5830. (explain)

Radeon R7 260X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5830 44800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16800 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 260X is superior to the Radeon HD 5830, by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 260X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5830 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4800 (38%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
