Radeon HD 6750 1GB vs Radeon HD 7870

Intro

The Radeon HD 6750 1GB has a clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 720 SPUs, 36 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7870, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1200 MHz on this card. It features 1280 SPUs along with 80 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 86 Watts
Radeon HD 7870 175 Watts
Difference: 89 Watts (103%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7870 should be 140% quicker than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 153600 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 89600 (140%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7870 should be quite a bit (about 207%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 80000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 26100 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 53900 (207%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7870 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 32000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20400 (176%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
