Radeon HD 5850 vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The Radeon HD 5850 has core speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1440(288x5) SPUs as well as 72 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7750, which features GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 512 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
Radeon HD 5850 151 Watts
Difference: 96 Watts (175%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5850 should be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7750 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 128000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (78%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 is a lot (more or less 104%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 7750. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 52200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26600 (104%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5850 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 23200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10400 (81%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
