GeForce 8500 GT vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8500 GT makes use of a 80 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 450 MHz. The DDR2 RAM is set to run at a speed of 400 MHz on this model. It features 16 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this model. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce 8500 GT 45 Watts
Difference: 14 Watts (45%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so theoretically they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) will be much (approximately 39%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8500 GT. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8500 GT 3600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1400 (39%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) will be much (more or less 39%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 8500 GT, and able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8500 GT 1800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 700 (39%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
