GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 589 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific model. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which has GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 memory set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 160 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) will be a little bit (about 6%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 288 (6%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) should be a bit (about 6%) more effective at AA than the GeForce GT 210, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 144 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
