GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 625 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 790 MHz on this card. It features 48 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6790, which has a clock frequency of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1050 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 800 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 98 Watts (188%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6790 should in theory perform much faster than the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 109120 (432%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 should be much (approximately 236%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23600 (236%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6790 is superior to the GeForce GT 315, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8440 (169%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
