Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon HD 5770

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 has core speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5770, which comes with GPU clock speed of 850 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1200 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Difference: 47 Watts (77%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5770 should be a small bit faster than the Radeon HD 5670 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (20%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5770 should be quite a bit (more or less 119%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18500 (119%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5770 is a lot (more or less 119%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 5670, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7400 (119%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
