GeForce GT 230 vs GeForce GT 240 GDDR5

Intro

The GeForce GT 230 comes with a GPU clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 1536 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 32 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5, which comes with core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 230 65 Watts
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 70 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (8%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 is 42% faster than the GeForce GT 230 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 230 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (42%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 will be quite a bit (more or less 100%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 230. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 230 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8800 (100%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at anti-aliasing, and be able to handle the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
