GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 features core clock speeds of 607 MHz on the GPU, and 802 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 352 SPUs along with 44 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6790, which features a clock speed of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1050 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 800 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6790 will be 31% quicker than the GeForce GTX 465 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 31808 (31%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 should be much (approximately 26%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6892 (26%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 465 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5984 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
