Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.

GTX 590 ----->l<----- Radeon HD 6990

hi says:

their are at the same performance ... well not exactly .. as the 590 is beated sometimes by 6990 in some games ... the nvidia is a better choice because is allot more silent and it consumes less energy and those 2-3 frames the 590 is beated sometimes is not noticeable at 100-200 fps ... also the 590 beats 6990 many times so .. basicaly their are equal 😀

Ali says:

WELL ALWAYS ATI WINS! AND IT WON AGAIN THIS TIME 🙂 ATI HAS 1 PROBLEM...

EXPENSIVE!!!!!!

BUT WORTHY !!!!

🙂

Warren says:

ATi expensive? It's ALOT cheaper than the GTX590! and it scales better in Crossfire than the GTX590. I really can't see the worth in spending an extra 150 quid on a GTX590 over the 6990.

I don't mind 384 bits vs 2556, if the rest is wore!!!
Bits aren't all in a VGA. GPU and amount of memory are very important! Like Clocks!!!!

Idiots says:

If you keep your fanoboy-ism aside both cards are equal and prices for the GTX590 dropped to almost 50$ difference between the cards. Overall performance Nvidia always wins. Some games are better for Ati some for Nvidia. Comes down to wich one you like more, performance wise they are equal.

nemanja says:

There are no problems for GTX 590 because it has CUDA cores dual GPU, its smaller you take ATI and it wont fit in your case.

And 590 has 3D far better done that the 6990 and THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IT IS DOESNT MAKE ANY NOISE while the 6990 fills your hole room with noise.

Novuake says:

Nemanja, you don't know what CUDA cores mean, do you???

CUDA cores are basically Stream Processors.

NVIDIA just named theres something else.

The 6990 is also a Duel GPU

The ATI card is better because its cheaper. Other than that they trade blows very well.

Novuake says:

Oh and the noise depends on the brand of GPU you buy, the Sapphire Cards are quiet.

hakeeme says:

what is good for games, pixel or texel?chosse the right for me.

hakeeme says:

i think noise depend on brands of card.gpu does not make noise.asus direct cu silent is cool and 0db.

Chris says:

The gtx 590 overall is the better card. Why you may ask? For one it doesn't sound like a lawn mower and secondly, it has way beter drivers and most games made nowadays are made to be played on nvidia. For example the battlefield series of games

Kolabsar says:

HD6990 vs GTX 590
375W vs 365W - TDP
310W vs 345W - Power consuming (is not the same as TDP)

192TMU vs 128TMU
768SP (3072SPu) vs 1024SP
830MHz vs 607MHz
2x160GB/s vs 163,9GB/s - memory bandwidth
amount of memory is important for the size / resolution textures, and AA and AF, in practice, enough for 1920x1080 resolution 1GB (for Metro 2033 or even GTA4 1.25 GB), more memory can be treated as a curiosity, unless the use of multi-monitor configuration.
As for the theory.
TMU have a different structure and can not be compared by multiplying the number of units and the clock frequency.
In practice coming out that are faster in NV about 1,8 - 2,0x than AMD, because it is clocked much higher clock SP domain, and not as previously ROP domain clock.
AMD introduced their own improvement in TMU in HD5670, were introduced significant changes in the structure of the TMU.
The same quantity of TA / TF (TMU) in the cluster. Although 20 units, bilinearn filtration efficiency is at the level 32TMU.
VLIW-5, VLIW-4 or the upcoming GCN architecture of the AMD is completely different from the CUDA processors used in Fermi. SPu units in the AMD cards have lower performance than the SP NVIDIA, as well as have a lower clock speed but there are 4-5x more than NVIDIA.
In my opinion you should compare the cards in games rather than dry numbers and benchmarks.
My opinion on the two cards are:
NVIDIA is useful for tasks where the professional card earns himself thanks to CUDA, which is something for the graphics professional.
AMD is cheaper and so Eyefinity can play on multiple monitors at once, something for fans of extreme games.
Both cards have their niche and use, and its place in the market.

dan says:

Both cards are equal in quality, stop being fanboys...it is obvious that the 6990 is better in value than the 590 I'm an nvidia user and i don't have a problem admiting it.

xws says:

ati win

ggg says:

Ati best!

BOBSAGET says:

the 6990 looks better too 🙂

Chris says:

Both cards are very similar in performance. Amd card costs less but is a bit louder.
Nvidia card might blow up because of the heat.

Then again AMD aren't renowned for their drivers.

I'd still say amd win because of the price

ATI wins ..its better ...look for all the comparison they are the same only in Texel Rate the ATI give a big Different ...but i Hate ATI big size ..thats all

ATI is just that bit better.Having said it's cheaper, way better price/performance,and that is what really matters.

Ok people I have seen both of these cards in action while playing Skyrim and SWTOR Beta at the same time. Was using a I5 2500k x4 and 8 gigs of DDR3 1600mhz ramm with the Nvidia card. And a AMD Fx-6100 x6 with 16 giggs of 1600mhz ramm for the amd card. Both had 1200 watt psu with dual low end volt. Corsair I believe. The Amd card ran around 20c hotter and precisley 35% louder in noise. It was also about 2 1/2 inchs longer. But I did notice the FPS in the 6990 ran Skyrim about 3-5 FPS better then the 590. But SWTOR ran nearly 20 FPS better . Both averaged around 90 FPS while running both games maxed. It all boils down to whether you want a 500hp mustang or a 400 hp lambo. And remember just like AMD vs Intel. The sheer speed is not always the winner, The architecture is nearly always what determines the over all ability. For example if you have 800mhz @ 3 1/2 inchs and 700mhz @ 2 1/2 inchs. The lower speed will win because of the distance needed to travel. Do not always think bigger engine ultimatly means faster..........

hyrulien says:

Incase you are wondering. They were Asus-nvidia and gigabyte-amd. And both used 2x 40 inch Toshiba Tvs at 1080p.

sakib says:

hey gamers don't upgrade ur pc with these graphics cards . becuz they r too much . and too much is not good.and u dont need them to play ur latest games .there r far cheaper graphics card than these.and they r good . so dont waste ur good money on gtx 590 or ati radeon hd 6990.

hyde says:

gtx 590 faster 1% than HD6990 😀

Amir Shotgun says:

I think if you buy 2 HD6970 and make it with CrossFire together is better than use a HD6990 VGA!
Anyway GT590 is no match for HD6990 at all !

rainbow says:

Ok. you forget the 'cuda core' which is very important even in 3d programs
not just for games
I think Nvidia is a step forward
😉

Anonymous says:

I'd safely say that i'm a nvidia user but comparing their reliability nvidia wins as less bugs and heatsink issues whereas ati are known to melt under pressure and makes louder noises. Maybe that's why nvidia sells its cards slightly more expensive than ati. Therefore ati wins by price comparisn still i would not buy either those cards as they are overpriced.

156 says:

i have a question, thers no doubting in the specs that the radeon is better but did any one see the bit rates?
590(384 x2) 6990(256 x2)?
unless iv been told lies the higher the bit ratio the more times the information can be procesed there by being faster?

killer says:

guys if you buy water cooling on the 6990 it il be allot quiet

jdrawmer says:

matter of choice. This is a pointless comparison because it's theoretical as opposed to actually testing against various games.

GTX580 SLI beats both of them, and for about the same price because you're not getting the lack of performance sticking 2 GPU's into the one card.

Realista says:

IF both cards have same price, I'll buy nVidia. BUT, since radeon is MUCH cheaper,I vote for it.
AND, since my nV GTX280 can handle every game on max., I'll not going to buy any of them 🙂

Accu says:

Where is the Asus Mars II to compare???

rockytruelyrox says:

I own both of these cards in two different rigs. I would be glad to sell the 6990 for 20% lesser price. All this numbers crap kept aside. I want my games so scale well and look good and get a steady 60 on my fraps. This 6990 crap runs like a bitch in every game that has physix. I dont get to see half of the effects that I notice on Nvidia. Needless to say i run the games with same config on both. If you dont believe buy them and run Batman Arkham city and let me know if you can see the fig and the dynamic lighting in the dark with physics particals. I have owned every major card that AMD has come out in last four years. Getting huge frams does not do it all, if you dont see half of the effect that it did not or rather could not render.

Vemri says:

are you sure the physx engine can be perform well in Mafia II using 6990?
i don't think so, the 590 will be more great running that game better at physx and stability either.
so guys... hope think clearly, you've got better performance when buy 6990 but you've got better performance + cuda + physx when you buy 590.
trust me, high end graphic card take the "Green", mid and low end just get some "Red"....
that's the best value for money!

tayyab says:

Amd did a great job ... And both cards have I idetical figures and it really dosent matter when its 85fps or 95fps .... So no competition there. But if u run both the cards side by side, ull notice complete absence of some effects( physics) like in arkham city or alice madness or battlefield 3... I am not saying that one is better than the other cause in most cases we are all worried about the fps ...and ati does a very good job there but if u are looking for the ultimate graphics experince go with nvidia ..beside if I had that much money I would go for a gtx560ti sli and subscribe the playboy magazine with the spare money.. And yeh I have a gtx 260 216 overclocked to 720 mhz and run every game at 50+ hz at 1080p..

Glaze says:

AMD isn't too amazing with their drives, I think i'd go with Nvidia no matter what.

SuperKewldude says:

Im kinda confused here!
AMD is much more reliable but then again nvidea got "PHYSYX" on their side.Literally!
I just cant make up my mind

Hey schoolboy's you all are so funny! I think before saying somthing you should lern a bit!
Also technical data given by manufacturer is realy relevant if you do a real testing. I have learned from my personal experiance and my friend experiance that everything AMD make is laggy! Procesors realy suck so you cant compare them with Intel and while Graphic card are sligthly better they still lagging= sucked. If you can accpet the laggy game then chos a bit cheeper AMD, but if you do mot wannt loos the moment the smooth NVIDA is your choice!

volja1971 says:

MG127 says:

i have to agree Kolabsar here, pure number comparing has no meaning.
but there is one thing that i don't like on amd cards ... the driver and their slowness in debugging.
e.g. Madness Returns and AMD mobility cards, it took ONE WHOLE YEAR to have at least a patch that grants playable frames

God says:

Well, there's no argument all all now, never was and never will be: Nvidia beats ATI barehanded, no tricks allowed. Same goes with Intel and AMD. There's nothing worst than AMD processors included the latest FX's. On the other hand, Core i7 3rd gen...simply amazing. Nvidia rules, CUDA cores rules, Physx and Nvidia 3d rules!!!

Oh, and i own an HD 4870, so no fan-gaysm here!!!

Mo says:

i own a 6990 and my previous card was a 5970. And performance wise it blows just about anything out the water just not the 690 but that is different beast! 7990 will take on the 690! and i will wait a bit then get me one as soon as the prices drop. And i like both Nvidia and ATI! If it werent for them we would have a one sided monopoly! So i thank Nvidia for challenging ATI and vice versa!! Still the 590 is a awesome card you can use it for a heater in the winter and a grill to bbq your meat on in the summer!! NUF SAID!!

Joshua says:

Get the 560Ti, I own it. It's seriously worth getting for its price point. Compare it to the radeon 7770 HD, which is close to the on-board gpu the xbox one is supposed to have. The reason for the comparison is that it will likely be around the min req for newer games in the new gen market.

G Hanson says:

And I think GPU providers also should start lowering Max TDP. Now AMD at 375W. Maybe next year AMD/Nvidea will come at 400W. FCC should make a rule to keep them in 250W or less. Like F1 race cars has engine rules. (I dont know if there is any FCC rules about it. I am not a lawyer).
