GeForce GTX 465 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 607 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 802 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 352 Stream Processors, 44 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which comes with GPU core speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 192 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 84 Watts (72%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 465 should in theory perform a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 4096 (4%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be a little bit (more or less 8%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2092 (8%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a better choice, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2176 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
