GeForce GTX 465 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 802 MHz on this card. It features 352 SPUs as well as 44 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1026 MHz on this card. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 84 Watts (72%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 465 should in theory be a little bit superior to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 4096 (4%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be just a bit (approximately 8%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2092 (8%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a better choice, though not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2176 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
