Radeon HD 5570 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 5570 features a GPU clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 400(80x5) Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5670, which comes with core clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 18 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 5670 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 5570 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 35200 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 will be a bit (about 19%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2500 (19%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 will be a small bit (more or less 19%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5570, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1000 (19%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
