Radeon HD 5750 1GB vs Radeon HD 5970

Intro

The Radeon HD 5750 1GB has a GPU core clock speed of 700 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1150 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 720(144x5) Stream Processors, 36 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5970, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 1600 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5750 1GB 86 Watts
Radeon HD 5970 294 Watts
Difference: 208 Watts (242%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 5970 should in theory be a lot better than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 256000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 73600 MB/sec
Difference: 182400 (248%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5970 is quite a bit (about 821%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 232000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 25200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 206800 (821%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5970 should be quite a bit (approximately 729%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB, and will be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 5970 92800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 11200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 81600 (729%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
