GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs Radeon HD 4670 512MB

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 has a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4670 512MB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 750 MHz. The GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 4670 512MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 22400 (70%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4670 512MB will be much (about 36%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 512MB 24000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6400 (36%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4670 512MB should be much (more or less 36%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 512MB 6000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (36%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
