GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 has core clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 1024 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which comes with GPU core speed of 822 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1002 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 47 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
Difference: 123 Watts (262%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 115456 (902%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be much (approximately 509%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43968 (509%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 Ti is superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21984 (509%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
