GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 vs GeForce GT 210

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 has a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR2 memory runs at 500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 210, which comes with core speeds of 589 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 210 31 Watts
GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 50 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (61%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GT 210 in general. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 16000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 210 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 is much (approximately 87%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 8800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4088 (87%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 is quite a bit (approximately 87%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 210, and capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 4400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2044 (87%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
