GeForce GTX 460 1GB vs Radeon HD 5770

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB has core clock speeds of 675 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 336 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5770, which comes with clock speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 800(160x5) SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 1GB 160 Watts
Difference: 52 Watts (48%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5770 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 115200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (50%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB will be a bit (about 11%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3800 (11%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB should be a lot (more or less 59%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 5770, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8000 (59%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
