GeForce 8400 GS 512MB vs GeForce GTX 460

Intro

The GeForce 8400 GS 512MB makes use of a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 650 MHz. The DDR2 RAM works at a frequency of 400 MHz on this particular model. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 460, which features a GPU core clock speed of 675 MHz, and 768 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 40 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 150 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (275%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 460 will be 1250% faster than the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 86400 MB/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 80000 (1250%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 should be a lot (approximately 627%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 37800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32600 (627%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 is superior to the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 16200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13600 (523%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
