GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) vs GeForce GT 220 GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) comes with a GPU clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 970 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 128 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, which comes with GPU core speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM running at 1012 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 48 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 58 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 135 Watts
Difference: 77 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 in general. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 62080 MB/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Difference: 29696 (92%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) should be quite a bit (about 316%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 41600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 31600 (316%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 10400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5400 (108%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
