GeForce GTS 250 512MB vs GeForce GTS 450 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB uses a 65/55 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 738 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a speed of 1100 MHz on this particular model. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 902 MHz on this particular model. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 145 Watts
Difference: 39 Watts (37%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB should theoretically perform much faster than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 512MB 70400 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 12672 (22%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB is much (about 89%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 512MB 47232 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22176 (89%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB will be just a bit (more or less 6%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTS 250 512MB, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 11808 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 720 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.

steve says:

i have a hd4770 with a self build reasonable spec pc on benchmark06 it has a score of 11285 compared to my 8600 score off 3640 and my hd4650 score of 4750 from but i still get frame gerking playing burnout paradise.its not so bad in windows xp but windows 7 it not so good.even worse when nero 10 is installed.i`ve never been a big fan off ati cards and i got this hd4770 cheap for around £50.graphic quility is a big thing for me but i have a small budget.i`ve always gone for nvidia so i`m considering a gts250 or gts450 oc version .i still might get gerking but ive found nvidia are better in some ways and even though I`m impressed with the hd4770 but i think i`ll stick with nvidia. thanks hwcompare helped me.
