GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 902 MHz on this particular card. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5670, which has a GPU core clock speed of 775 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (74%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5670 is 11% quicker than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 6272 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a lot (about 62%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9556 (62%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is quite a bit (approximately 102%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5670, and able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6328 (102%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
