GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 790 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which has a core clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1250 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 94 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should be 67% faster than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 64000 (67%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be much (about 271%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 51440 (271%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6640 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
