GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 vs GeForce GT 430 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 makes use of a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 540 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 700 MHz on this particular card. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 430 1GB, which features a GPU core clock speed of 700 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 96 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 47 Watts
GeForce GT 430 1GB 60 Watts
Difference: 13 Watts (28%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GT 430 1GB should in theory be much superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 430 1GB 28800 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (29%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 430 1GB will be much (approximately 30%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce GT 430 1GB 11200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2560 (30%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 is superior to the GeForce GT 430 1GB, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 430 1GB 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1520 (54%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
