GeForce GT 340 vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 has a GPU clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6770, which has a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1050 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 800 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6770 108 Watts
Difference: 39 Watts (57%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6770 should be a lot faster than the GeForce GT 340 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (24%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 is much (more or less 105%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 340. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18400 (105%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 will be much (about 227%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GT 340, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10000 (227%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
