GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs GeForce GT 340 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) makes use of a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 450 MHz. The DDR2 memory is set to run at a speed of 400 MHz on this card. It features 8 SPUs as well as 4 TAUs and 2 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GT 340 1GB, which has a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 40 Watts
GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
Difference: 29 Watts (73%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 340 1GB should perform much faster than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (750%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 1GB is a lot (approximately 878%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15800 (878%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 1GB should be quite a bit (about 389%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM), and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3500 (389%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
