Radeon HD 3850 256MB vs Radeon HD 6970

Intro

The Radeon HD 3850 256MB makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 828 MHz on this card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6970, which has GPU core speed of 880 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1375 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1536 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6970 250 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (233%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6970 should in theory be a lot better than the Radeon HD 3850 256MB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 176000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3850 256MB 52992 MB/sec
Difference: 123008 (232%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 should be quite a bit (about 690%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 256MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 84480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 256MB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 73792 (690%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6970 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 28160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 256MB 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17472 (163%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
