Radeon HD 4670 1GB vs Radeon HD 6970

Intro

The Radeon HD 4670 1GB features a core clock frequency of 750 MHz and a GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory frequency of 1100 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is made up of 320(64x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6970, which comes with a clock frequency of 880 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1375 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 1536 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Difference: 180 Watts (257%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6970 will be 400% faster than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 176000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 140800 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 is quite a bit (about 252%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 84480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 60480 (252%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6970 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 28160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22160 (369%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
