GeForce 9800 GTX+ vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX+ comes with a GPU clock speed of 738 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 1100 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 Stream Processors, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce 9800 GTX+ 145 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9800 GTX+ overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 89600 (127%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be much (approximately 49%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 9800 GTX+. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 47232 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23168 (49%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 11808 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13792 (117%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
