GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) vs Radeon HD 6870

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) comes with core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 970 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6870, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1050 MHz on this particular model. It features 1120 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 135 Watts
Radeon HD 6870 151 Watts
Difference: 16 Watts (12%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6870 is 116% quicker than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 62080 MB/sec
Difference: 72320 (116%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 will be quite a bit (more or less 21%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92). (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 41600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8800 (21%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6870 is superior to the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92), and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18400 (177%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
