GeForce 8800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTX has core clock speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 768 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6850, which has a core clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 960 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6850 127 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTX 155 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (22%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6850 should theoretically be much better than the GeForce 8800 GTX in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (48%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6850 is a small bit (about 1%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8800 GTX. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 400 (1%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6850 is superior to the GeForce 8800 GTX, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11000 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
