GeForce 8800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTX features clock speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 768 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6850, which features a clock speed of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 960 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6850 127 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTX 155 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (22%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6850 should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GTX in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (48%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6850 will be a bit (more or less 1%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTX. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 400 (1%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6850 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11000 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
